Urban Harvest: #12

“You have successfully impregnated a vessel and achieved what you wanted.”
“None of the vessels were successful Debbie.”
“What? But these reports are....”
“Yes, they are true. It’s you Debbie. You are the host.”
 “No, this can’t be. No.”
“Don’t you remember honey?”
..............................................................................
It all came back to me like a flood. The light, the tank and the pain.
“You don’t know how happy I am for us. Your body turned out to be the perfect vessel for it to attach. Don’t you see honey? You were here for a reason. Didn’t I always tell you that?” William explained to me.
..............................................................................
“You carry a genetically enhanced being. Just imagine, once it’s born we can harvest a dozen of its kind from its DNA and your blood. We could rule the whole of planet earth,” he declared.
..............................................................................
I get up and try to stand on my feet. The news was too much. The room was moving. Everything was rotating. I tried to hold on to the chair but caught only air. I wanted to get out as soon as possible.
I observed him carefully as he walked to the door. I knew that time was running out but suppressed the urge to check my watch. I took a deep breath and started counting in reverse under my breath.
"Ten, nine, eight, seven..."
..............................................................................
I moved towards him and looked at him deeply.
He wrapped his arms around me.

“One,” I said softly.

Urban Harvest: #11

On the bed lay all my stuff except for the syringes, they were gone. Damn.
“Oh Debbie you are not going to find them there. They had to confisticate it. I must say it was a good choice, two lethal doses in one. Pretty smart.”
“What do you want Will?”
“Why don’t you get dressed? I will be back in ten.”
.............................................................................................

I heard the door lock from the outside. I got dressed real quick and searched for anything that could help me fight. There was nothing.
I heard the door unlock. William held the door open for me. He led me to my lab. It felt like I was seeing it for the first time.
.............................................................................................
As I settled into the slightly uncomfortable chair, I noticed blood samples that had my name written all over. Each came with a date. I cringed at the thought of William experimenting with my blood. That explained all the dots on my right hand. I noticed a shiny piece of metal lying hidden nearby. On closer inspection it turned out to be a scalpel. I quickly hid it in my sleeve. His laptop was on.
Without wasting any time I logged into the programme “Quarantine”. I prayed that he had not changed the password. He could be back in any second. I typed furiously. Entering answers after answers. And then I hit initiate. I turned the laptop away from his direct view. Only few minutes remained.
.............................................................................................
I sat down as if nothing had happened.
Will returned carrying a file under his arms.  I went through it slowly trying to process each and every word.
.............................................................................................

“So what do you think?” he asked me caressing my chin.

Urban Harvest: #10

“I knew it.”
“It has successfully attached to the host. Everything is in sync sir.”
 “How are her vitals?”
“Her vitals are very much stable sir.”
“Okay, keep me updated with the lab reports,” William replied calmly.
..................................................................................
What was ‘it’ and what who was it attached to? Was it Amy? Was she still alive? I needed answers. I tried to get up in vain.
..................................................................................
My eyes, they opened. Everything was blurry. There was nobody besides a sleeping nurse. I tried to remove my cannula. My fingers hurt. I tried to reach for the table and dropped the tray waking the nurse.
She saw me and immediately buzzed for help. She tried to restrain me. I felt too weak to fight her back.
Will was by my side in no time.
..................................................................................
“Amy,” those were the first words that came out of my mouth.
He assured me she was fine and was recovering in the adjacent room.
“Show me,” I demanded.
..................................................................................
After three painful hours, I was wheeled into another room adjoined to mine. Amy was recovering. She looked pale but better. I breathed a sigh of relief.
He caressed my face.
..................................................................................
“It’s okay. Everything is fine.”
“I need out of this gown.”
“You don’t plan to run, do you?”
I look at him disgusted.

“Just kidding Deb. You will find your belongings on your way back.”

Urban Harvest: #9

Just as I thought it was all over, I saw the thing coming back. This time it was more brilliant. I pushed Amy out of the way.  I could hear screams and cries coming from the outside. The light pushed me into the tank and I felt it penetrating me. I tried to scream but I could not. Everything was fading fast. Will was by my side holding hands. He looked anxious. He was trying to tell me something. But all I felt was darkness.
........................................................................................
I tried opening my eyes, they just wouldn’t. I heard someone walk in. It was a very hoarse voice.

“Congratulations William, you achieved what you set out for young man.”

“We need more men like you,” said another.

“Thank you for believing in me gentlemen. We shall meet again on Thursday.”
........................................................................................
There was absolute silence after that.
........................................................................................
A few minutes later I heard more than one muffled voice in the room. I recognized one.

“Sir, the results are positive.”
